As we consider Christmas this year and remember the journey we have been through this year, one thing is very clear, the god of this world Satan has tried to make God’s people ineffective. For most of the year going to church has had its limitations and we were forced to live that way. Satan has always been on the attack and trying to hide the true meaning of Christmas. For many years Christmas was displayed as “Xmas”, but a successful “Put Christ back into Christmas” has prevailed and now the improper name is rarely seen. However, the true meaning of Christmas is still under attack. I know of one state government that has banned all songs that mention the birth of Jesus from all state schools and shopping centers. It is time for us to put aside all things that do not promote the true meaning of Christmas. In Matthew 1:21 we read that the Angel said to Joseph “Mary will bring forth a son, and you shall call His name Jesus for He shall save His people from their sins”. Sadly this is not the message the church has declared over the years, while it is important to acknowledge the other aspects of Christmas we should never stay away from the fundamental reason for the birth of Jesus. Christmas should be a joyous occasion because we read in Luke 2:10 the angel of the Lord said to the shepherds “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people”. The realisation that God loved us so much that He sent His son to earth should bring great joy to us, this is something to be happy about. We give gifts because God gave us the best gift. The falsehood of Santa should never be promoted in our Christian families. When I was growing up, half of my weekly pocket money was saved and used to buy a present for each other member of the family, which brought great joy to the family on Christmas day. The next thing the angel said in Luke 2:14 was “Glory to God in the highest, and on the earth peace, goodwill towards men”. This verse declares what effect the birth of Jesus should bring. Firstly, it brings glory to God this is where we need to step back and assess if our actions bring glory to God, and if it doesn’t then we need to look at what needs to be changed. Christmas should remind us of one of the names of Jesus that is “Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6), this is where our Christian character shines in this dark world. And the final thing this verse declares is that Christ brings goodwill to all men. It is time to focus again on the real reason for Christmas because over the years The church celebrates just like the world does. It puts on excellent performance but there is no life-changing message. It is time to remember the true meaning of Christmas – we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
