While it is true that the day chosen to celebrate the birth of Jesus could not be the day He was born it is important that when we celebrate the birth of Jesus we do it following the truth of God’s word. The sad reality is that the celebration of Christmas Day has become a religious festival with very little biblical truth. As I look at this I see the god of this world being victorious with the church worldwide reinforcing his lies and deception. The most important truth and significant truth is that Jesus was born to a virgin, this so critical to understand and believe. How this happened is recorded in Matthew 1:18-25 and Luke 1:26-38. Without the virgin birth, there could not be a sinless Saviour who could carry our sins to the cross so that we could be born again and become part of God’s family. As I repent of this I have realised I have been part of celebrations of the traditions of man all my life and I wonder why I did become aware of the truth or lack of it in Christmas celebrations.  One of the big surprises I discovered was that God did not make a major announcement when Jesus was born. The only people that were spoken to were the shepherds in the fields looking after their sheep. They were not looking for or expecting Jesus to be born. In Luke 2:9 it is recorded that the Angel appeared and: “The glory of the Lord shone around them and they were afraid”  This is what we should experience when our celebration is correct as we celebrate the virgin birth of Jesus “The glory of the Lord should appear”. This is how we know whether our celebration is God-pleasing or not. In Verse 10 The angel said to the shepherds “ Do not be afraid” because the birth of Jesus is “Good tidings of great Joy which is for all people”. We should not be side-tracked and do other things to celebrate His virgin birth’. Verse 11  makes it very clear the purpose of His birth “For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord”. The reason for the season is that our Saviour has been born. Then the Angel was accompanied by a multitude of the Heavenly Hosts praising God who said “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good-will towards men”. The Highlight of our Christmas celebrations is that we declare that the Glory of God is above everything and what we are doing declares the Glory of God and we become carriers of His peace and express goodwill to all men. I am so glad that I have been reminded to put Christ first in my Christmas Celebrations. God has a great plan for our lives and to be part of that plan we must experience our Saviour who was born of a virgin, died on the cross to take the punishment for our sins, and rose again on the third day and because He lives we can also live a life loving our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
