As I come to the last blog on being blessed I have turned my attention to the Old Testament. The reason behind this is to show the difference in the meaning of the word blessed in the Old and New testament. In the beatitudes, the word blessed means to invoke God’s favour and be spiritually prosperous. However, in Psalm 1 the word blessed has a different meaning, the word blessed means the happiness (pleasure) found in knowing that I am on the right path heading in the correct direction. I take great comfort from this understanding for it means my daily living with Jesus is a constant happy experience. Let us now look at Psalm 1:1-3 which says: “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law, he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf shall not wither; and whatsoever he does shall prosper”. This psalm clearly defines what action is needed to be blessed and the behaviour that stops us from being blessed. Firstly “Walking in the counsel of the ungodly”, walking suggests choosing to go a certain way to reach a certain goal. This exposes the pressure we face all the time through the news media and ungodly standards to form the standards by which we live by and if those standards do not bring us closer to the Lord then we should not walk in them. Secondly, we are warned not to stop and be part of the way of the world. In this, we are warned because it is so dangerous when we stop to join in with that is not of God. Thirdly, we are warned not to sit down and allow ungodly behaviour to be our choice of living. Scornful means to be critical of what others are doing (Being Judgemental). We must guard against being critical of others for that action takes us away from a close relationship with the Lord. Now to the good part! – how to be blessed? Firstly, taking great delight and thinking about God’s way for it encourages us to live by the word of God. There are times when I have read the Bible out of duty and that choice made it a chore and rarely did it help me. However, that has all changed and it is a delight to have the word of God part of my daily living. Next, we are encouraged that when we live right our life is like a tree planted by rivers of water and because of this we are constantly being fruitful which always impacts other people. Next, it declares that the tree’s leaf does not wither and speaks of continual shade. Shade brings comfort to all who rests under it. Finally, the blessed person prospers in all aspects of their life, God is so good to us when we choose to live His way and His hand of blessing is upon us.
