It has been so encouraging to look at the various situations in which we have the opportunity for our spirit to grow through God’s favour. Because it will only happen when we do not give in to our fleshly desires. One of the main battles that we face on an ongoing basis is the importance of self, now and then the thought arises that I am important and my opinion counts. The verse that we are now looking at challenges that notion. Matthew 5:9 says: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the Sons of God”. The bible definition of ‘peacemaker’ is to be silent or to be still, or literally, it means to hold your peace. This is different from the dictionary meaning which is freedom from war or friendly circumstances. To understand what the bible meaning is it is important to look at how Jesus lived. Isaiah 53:7 says of Jesus “He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep, before it’s shearer is silent, so He opened not His mouth”. When Jesus was on trial at His crucifixion although He was falsely accused He did not defend Himself. This is why Jesus could say in John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you, not as the world gives do I give you”. I had a situation recently where I did not act as a peacemaker, a person commented about one of the blogs which had no relevance to the blog and were inaccurate instead of just removing the comment I chose to try and correct the writer – this turned out to be a total disaster and the person was hurt by me, this should never have happened – I was not a peacemaker. If Jesus did not defend Himself and gave us His peace as a lover of Jesus then it should have not a problem for me to be a peacemaker. This is where I need to be on the lookout that self is becoming important to me. It is important to look at the way we are blessed then we are a peacemaker. Jesus said that the peacemaker shall be called the sons of God. This is so powerful because a son has the nature and authority of the father. A peacemaker exhibits the character of God to the people they are in contact with. The world must see the true character of God and this happens when we are peacemakers. We live in a world that experiences so little peace so it is so important that we do not live by the world’s standard but demonstrate the character of God. As we experience God’s favour in our spirit by being a peacemaker we will affect the people around us.
We have to have God’s peace / love to turn the other cheek, which is not always as humans. God still knows our heart and that is what God looks at. Keep listening to God and he will continue to bless you with the words we need to hear. Love you brother
