As we approach Pentecost Sunday we must consider the significance of the Holy Spirit being given to the Church. Being filled with the Holy Spirit was important to Jesus because we read that when He was baptised in the River Jordon the Holy Spirit remained upon Him (John 1:32). Then He was led into the wilderness by the Spirit (Matthew 4:1, Mark 1:12 & Luke 4:1 ) then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee to commence His ministry (Luke 4:14), I want to point out if Jesus needed to be filled with the Holy Spirit so do I. Jesus told His disciples in John 16:7 “Never the less I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper(Holy Spirit) will not come to you, but if I depart I will send Him to you”. Jesus also said in John 7:38&39 “He who believes in me, as the scripture has said, out of his heart (innermost being) will flow rivers of living water. But this He spoke concerning the Spirit whom those believing in Him would receive, for the Holy Spirit was not yet given because Jesus was not yet glorified “. Today the Holy Spirit has been given because Jesus has been glorified. The last thing Jesus said to His disciples was recorded in Acts 1:4&5 “And being assembled together with them He told them not to depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which He said’ You have heard from me; for John truly baptised with water, but you shall be baptised with the Holy Spirit not many days from now ’ “. The final thing that Jesus said is recorded in Acts 1:8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you shall be witnesses to me to in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth “. The Bible records that all the people in the upper room were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke with other tongues on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:4) Now I want to mention the four evidences that people exhibit when they are filled with the Holy Spirit. Firstly the Bible says that you shall receive power, the Greek word for power is ‘Dunamis’ which is translated to Strength and Ability. I have experienced that supernatural strength and ability in all facets of my life and I have been amazed at times where decisions came from. Secondly, the Bible says you shall be witnesses of Jesus, when you are full of the Holy Spirit all you want to talk about is how great Jesus is in your life, and that has a powerful effect on the life of other people. Thirdly, you will speak with other tongues ( a language that you have never learned), I call speaking with tongues my Heavenly Language, and the purpose of speaking with tongues is to make you Spiritually stronger (1 Corinthians 14:4) . Next declare the mysteries of God for situations ( Corinthians 14:2 ) Thirdly you cannot use your Heavenly Language too much ( 1Corinthians 14:18). The final evidence is that we will demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit in our lives, Galatians 5:22 &23 says: “But the fruit of the Spirit is Love, Joy, Peace, Longsuffering, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-Control, against such there is no law”. One final word is that what I have written applies to our relationship with the Lord and is not to be confused with the “Gifts of the Holy Spirit” that Jesus has given to the Church and is a different subject to be studied and understood.
