Trusting God in Trials: A Reflection on Psalm 59:7–8

Overcoming Spiritual Drift in a Self-Centered World

One of the dangers that David experienced was the attitude of the people attacking him. They thought they could do whatever pleased them, and they did not have to answer to anyone. We are living in a time when this attitude is so prevalent; people believe that they can please themselves and get away with it. We know that this is false believing because every person will stand before God and give an account of how they lived and be rewarded according to their way of living. Unfortunately, this is a subject that is rarely talked about very often.  So there is a danger that people who once were passionate about their God have got caught up in the ways of the world, and living with Jesus is no longer a priority. And because nothing seems to change, they become content to live that way, thinking that is the correct way to live.

Restoring Your Passion for Christ: Standing on Psalm 59:7

As I reflect on this, I realise that during my recovery from my operation, there were weeks when I just coasted along and was not passionate about my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. I am glad I did not stay that way  and started to restore my close relationship with my Lord. Loving God is a continual choice that we make. Verse 7 says:

“Indeed they belch out with their mouth: swords are in their lips; for they say ‘Who hears’.
Psalm 59:7

In this verse, we find David declaring the futility of what the enemy is saying. David’s confidence is in his God, despite being taken by surprise that Saul wanted him dead. After all, he knows that will not happen, because he had been anointed by Samuel to be the next king of Israel. It is important that we understand the significance of being born again. Declare the truth: I am born again, and God protects me; this fact gives me great confidence to trust God.

Trusting God’s Sovereignty Through Life’s Hardest Trials

As I look back over my life, there have been a couple of situations which I had to endure; at the time, they were very hard experiences, but now I recognise that God had the situation under control. It does not matter what the god of this world does, and his ungodly influence will come to an end. I am so glad that God is in control, and we need to keep reminding ourselves of this fact, because God does not change. I note that some Christians are hanging on to the belief that Jesus will come again and deliver them from their troubles. While I know that it will happen, it is not my motivating reason for living.

Psalm 59:8 Meaning: Unshakable Confidence in God’s Power

Verse 8 says:

“But you, O Lord, shall laugh at them; you shall have all the nations in derision ”
Psalm 59:8

In this verse, David reinforces the fact that God is greater than what the nations think that they can do.  It does not matter what people believe; it does not change the fact that God is God and He is all powerful, and His plans will come to pass. We must never forget and allow ourselves to be deceived into believing anything other than that God is in control. David did not know what was ahead of him, and how long Saul would pursue him. What he had was an unshakable belief and trust that God would protect him.  When we face difficulties, we do not know how long they will last, but we know who is in control of our lives. It is so good to be reminded of who God is and the joy of belonging to Him. We may not know what is in the future, but we do not fear because our confidence is in our God.
