Psalm 59 Devotional: Trusting God’s Protection in Adversity

Two Ways to Respond to Life’s Hardest Trials
When an adverse situation comes that we are not prepared for, or believe it could happen to us, there are two ways that we can react. Firstly, believe that life is not fair because of the way that we are living; this adverse situation should not happen. Secondly, believe that God has the answer to the situation and choose to draw closer to Him. David chose the second way, but over my lifetime I have seen many good people turn their backs on God because of the adverse situation they faced. There have been times when I was tempted to turn my back on God; however, because I love the Lord so much, I have chosen not to be adversely affected by the situation. While it is easy to write about situations, it is not so easy to live through them.
Building a Relationship with God Before the Storm
This is why there is no substitute for having a real relationship with the Lord. While the Bible does not say how David developed his relationship with his God, it is evident by the way that he lived. What surprises me is the way that David wanted to punish those people who were trying to kill him. Except for Saul, David would not touch him; even though he had the opportunity to do so, he would not touch the Lord’s anointed. And he did not question God’s anointing. Verse 5 says:
“You, therefore, O Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel, awake to punish all the nations”.
In this verse, we see David declaring the greatness of his God. This is a very important truth to be reminded of. It does not matter how difficult the situation is, it is important to remember the greatness of our God and that He is in control despite what is happening in the world.
Letting God Fight Your Battles (Psalm 59:5)
Also, in this verse, David asked the Lord to be the one who would punish the evil, not himself. Remember it does not matter how unfairly we are being treated; the fight is always against God. This is an area that we do not talk about very often. Today we see the world getting worse; instead of being worried, it is an opportunity to experience the love of God by the way that we live. David strongly believed that those who were trying to harm him would not go unpunished, so he kept reminding his God of his expectations.
Experiencing God’s Protection and Escape (Psalm 59:6)
Verse 6 says:
“At evening they return, they growl like a dog and go all around the city”.
The enemy seemed to be everywhere, and while that could be alarming, it is interesting that when the trial seems to be at its greatest, it is an opportunity for us to experience the greatness of God. In a measure that we could not experience any other way. We must never forget that God has promised in His word that He would make a way of escape for every trial that we face. This is why God is such a great God: He protects us, provides for us, and, most importantly, we belong to Him. In life, there are two ways to look at the way we live: with or without God. As you read this Psalm of David, may your confidence in your God increase. Because he has defeated Satan, and he has no power over us, and we know what the end will be: glorious living with Jesus.
