Trusting God in Trials: Lessons on Unshakeable Faith from David

Finding Unshakeable Confidence in Life’s Trials

In this Psalm, David declares his unshakeable confidence in his God, despite being hunted by Saul, who had decided to kill him. It is easy to have confidence in God when everything is working out well in your life.  And when this continues for a long time, there is a danger that our good life is happening because of us and not God. Also, when unexpected trouble comes and continues, we can be tempted to believe that God has abandoned us. This is why we need to spend time with the Lord daily so that we never forget that we are a child of God and He never forgets us. Even though he was experiencing for the first time that he did not deserve. It is very interesting that, although David was a skilled fighter, he did not rely on his ability, but he relied on his God.

Relying on God’s Power, Not Our Own Strength

This is a challenge to us because we can become deluded and believe that we can fight the battle in our strength. David was very clear about what he desired God to do: intervene and destroy the enemy. Sometimes we are tempted to be reluctant in praying to our God for help. We are not forceful in declaring the greatness of our God. Verse 3 says:

“For look, they lie in wait for my life, the mighty gather against me, not for any transgressions that I have done, O Lord”.
Psalm 59:3

David was very sure that what was happening to him was not the result of some wrong that he had done. Sometimes we can forget that we reap what we have sown. This is an unchangeable law of God. The other thing that stands out is that, in the life of David up to that point, he does not tolerate his enemy.

Refusing Compromise and Living a Godly Life

He wants the enemy to be destroyed and defeated and not to be part of the way that he lived. The Bible is very clear in Romans 12:2, which says that we are not to be conformed to this world. Over the years, I have observed so many people who claim to be born again spend their time being entertained by ungodly entertainment. They want to live with the enemy of their soul. Because of his attitude toward his enemy, even though he did not deserve to be treated the way that he was. He was able to not allow the enemy to take away his relationship with his God. Although he was on the run, he still lived a Godly life. This is a good example to live by. We all have times when things do not work out as we desire. It is essential in these times that we remind ourselves that God is in control of our lives and He is working for our good.

Overcoming Enemy Lies with God’s Protection

Verse 4 says:

“They run and prepare themselves through no fault of mine. Awake to help me and behold”.
Psalm 59:4

David was mislead that God was not aware of the way he was being treated and that he was all alone. This is a strategy od Satan, he wants us to believe that we are not important to God. The Bible declares that we are more valuable than the sparrow who he provides for. It is so important in these times we keep reminding ourselves that we belong to God and that He protects His children. What David did not know that this was the beginning of a long battle with Saul. Understand the length of the battle is unimportant because God is committed to protect us in all circumstances of life. I love the Lord so much because He has brought me through many t20rials over my lifetime and loving Him has become so precious to me.
